Match transactions to the statement

Check the rows that cleared, leave the rows that did not, and watch the difference close.

Read The Two Sections

Check a row only when it appears on the statement in front of you. The difference closes as a result of accurate checking — not the other way round.

This is the manual matching pass. When a verified statement covers the period, Tally does this for you.

An active reconciliation splits the work:

  • Statement periodrows in or near this statement period. Most of your checking happens here.
  • Prior unclearedolder unreconciled rows stay here until reconciled or fixed.

A prior-uncleared row is not an error. A check written in March that cleared in April belongs there until April's statement clears it.

Work The Statement, Line By Line

  1. Start at the top of the statement, not the top of the screen.
  2. For each statement line, find the matching row and check it.
  3. Confirm the date and amount before checking — a same-amount, different-day row is a different transaction.
  4. Use the search box for a specific amount, description, or reference.
  5. Watch Difference move toward $0.00 as you go.

Leave unchecked every row that is not on this statement. Those are outstanding items and they carry forward — see Handle outstanding checks and deposits.

Do Not Check To Force A Balance

Checking a row that did not clear makes the difference reach zero and makes the reconciliation wrong. The next period will disagree by the same amount and the cause will be harder to find.

If the difference will not close, stop checking and see Investigate a reconciliation difference.

Uncheck A Mistake

Uncheck any row you checked in error; the difference updates immediately. You can leave a reconciliation part-finished and return to it — it stays In progress in Bank Recs, and Continue rec resumes it.

When Difference is $0.00, continue to Finish a bank reconciliation.
